Even the most zen and grounded amongst us worry from time to time, with a seemingly endless volley of challenges fired our way by an increasingly stressful and demanding world. A 2021 survey by Ipsos titled “What worries the world?” found that a staggering 25% of the surveyed population globally worried about crime and violence. Unsurprisingly, at the time that the survey was conducted (the final quarter of 2021), the COVID-19 pandemic led in terms of what people worry about, followed by concerns over unemployment (which came out top for South Africa in the breakdown of what people worry about most per country), poverty and social inequality, financial and political corruption and, of course, rising crime rates.
The are many things that we don’t have a whole lot of control over, for example the state of the economy or what the weather will be like tomorrow. Fortunately, there are also things that we can directly influence, things in which we have a say, such as who is voted into office, and whether or not we recycle and take steps to help minimise our impact on the environment.
